Snow expected this week

This could all change...but as of now, some snow and very cold weather expected about all this week. Tomorrow will probably be the warmest day with temps around 50. A cold front will push through bringing possibly rain, initially, Monday night then changing to snow late into Tuesday morning..mostly snow in the mountains. Some, especially higher up, could see up to an inch..little or none for the rest. Warmer ground temps may hurt initially, but there could be some good snow with it. Snow showers likely to continue through Wednesday. Best accumulations to come late Tuesday into Wednesday as another clipper drops through enhancing snow. Right now, it appears we could be seeing something in the range of 1-3 inches of snow (3-6 in the mountains) with locally higher amounts especially higher up. Note that it's snow showers and there will be bands of snow. That means it will vary in each location. Some people could be measuring several inches and someone just down the road not very much. Also the colder it gets...the better, with snow ratios. Snow lovers will want to see a good band of moisture from the Lakes stretching to this area and enhancing with mountains creating good upslope conditions. These things can disappoint if the wind direction and such isn't just or it could overachieve...as we've seen before. You'd also would like to see these disturbances dropping through to be stronger further enhancing snow.

Winter storm watches are up for the western North Carolina mountains for 4-6, locally higher, down there. Probably will see snow advisories issued here soon for Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Along with the snow....it's going to be pretty cold....finally. Highs in the 20s and 30s Tuesday, lows in the teens, and likely not getting out of the 20s for highs on Wednesday, some may not get out of the teens. Then Wed. night lows are expected to be in the teens to single digits (especially if the skies clear and there is good snow cover). Winds are expected to pick up Tuesday, so the wind chill factors will drop pretty low (could drop to around zero at times Tuesday night with higher gusts).

This is what they have for us now:

An area of low pressure and associated cold front will bring much colder air into the Tennessee Valley and Southern Appalachians Tuesday and Wednesday. After the cold front moves east of the region on Tuesday...a strong upper level disturbance will move across the region mainly Tuesday night and Wednesday. This will bring a good chance of snow showers...and snow accumulations across southwestern Virginia and east Tennessee. Total snowfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches is expected in southwest Virginia and the mountains of Eastern Tennessee. Isolated areas may have more than 6 inches in the smoky mountains. Valley areas of east Tennessee may have only a trace in the South to a couple inches in Northeast Tennessee.

The cold front Tuesday will drop temperatures into the 30s Tuesday with much colder temperatures Tuesday night and highs Wednesday from below 20 across parts of Southwest Virginia and the higher mountains in east Tennessee to the lower 30s in the southern valley. Combined with the cold temperatures west to northwest Winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts 35 to 45 mph will drop wind chill temperatures to 10 above to 10 below zero.
